Fungi anthologyFelix receives a late-night phone call from his friend Jerry Baldwin. Jerry is a realtor with a unique specialty – he only represents properties that are haunted. The designer working on his latest reno project isn’t answering her phone, and since this is one of Jerry’s houses, it could mean something very bad has happened.

Felix and Jerry drive out to the house and come face to fungusy face with a threat from the Black Lands that could be the end of them both.

  • “Out of the Blue” received an honourable mention in The Best Horror of the Year, Volume 5.

Notes:

“Out of the Blue” is the second story to feature Felix’s foil Jerry Baldwin. I like writing Jerry stories because while they seem light and funny on the surface, they have a tendency to get unexpectedly dark and sinister.

This story probably wouldn’t have been written if Orrin Grey (one of the editors of Fungi) hadn’t asked me for a fungus-themed story a few years back. It was a no-brainer to make it a Felix Renn story with my Toronto PI being confronted with a fungus from the Black Lands.

Reviews:

“… an entertaining supernatural noir…”
